SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- A veto has been issued against the 2026 Schenectady city budget, which was passed by the city council on November 1. Mayor Gary McCarthy announced his veto on Thursday, stating there are concerns about fiscal assumptions and long-term financial impacts.
“The budget passed by the City Council relies on incorrect and wholly unrealistic assumptions regarding revenue projections,” McCarthy said. “It is our responsibility to ensure that the City of Schenectady remains on sound financial footing, and this budget fails to meet that standard.”
The approved budget has an overall increase of 1.8%, keeping taxes under the state-mandated tax cap. Additionally, the budget includes a reduced garbage collection fee of $54 per unit.
