MEMPHIS, Tenn. - As the federal government shutdown continues, families across the Mid-South say they are already feeling the impact in their kitchens. The temporary cutback to SNAP benefits has left many parents figuring out how to stretch groceries and make meals last longer.

In response, local organizers have launched a weekly community meal effort called Feed The Block, hosted at Young Life Memphis, located at 1177 Poplar Avenue. The program is a collaboration between The Equity Alliance, Game Changers, and Young Life.

Martin Johnson, Regional Organizing Manager with The Equity Alliance, said the event was created to meet an immediate need that emerged during the shutdown.
