NEW YORK (PIX11) -- As millions of New Yorkers fight food insecurity now more than ever, one fine dining restaurant is catering to the crisis — bringing a more equitable experience to its neighbors.

In the East Village, where many restaurants cost a small fortune, Community Kitchen is bringing in diverse flavors and diners on a budget.

“Food must be accessible and affordable to everyone,” said a first-time diner from New Jersey.

That’s precisely the point of the nonprofit restaurant, opened in September by writer and food advocate Mark Bittman, offering a Michelin-level dining experience on a dime. The restaurant serves nine courses for as little as $15, following the mantra: pay what you can, come as you are.
