Experts in online safety are urgently calling for nudifying apps, which can ‘undress’ everyday images of people and turn them into pornography, to be banned.

While photos of anyone, of any gender, can be uploaded to these apps and turned into deepfakes, we know that a staggering 99% of nude deepfakes feature women and girls.

A recent investigation by campaigns group Collective Shout found nudifying and undressing apps can be used to turn regular images of women and girls into extreme and violent pornography in a matter of seconds.

They can also be used to produce virtual child sexual abuse material for sharing on public online galleries.

The group has now called for a global ban on nudifying apps and websites.
