MUSKEGON COUNTY, MI – A sheriff’s deputy fatally shot a man who allegedly charged the deputy with a box cutter on Friday, Nov. 7, at the Comfort Inn in Whitehall Township.
The incident began just before 5 a.m.
A caller was worried that their 37-year-old son would harm himself at the hotel, at 2822 West Holton Whitehall Road, where he had been staying.
Muskegon County sheriff’s deputies responded to conduct a welfare check.
Once deputies gained access to the man’s room, they saw he had visible self-inflicted injuries. One of the deputies left to get medical supplies from a patrol car while another stayed with the man.
Initial investigation showed that the man was holding a box cutter when he charged the deputy. The deputy shot the man several times.
