LOWELL, MI — As the seventh of sixteen children, Melinda Burgos-Olmos learned to “cook with her heart” while helping raise her younger siblings.
Sabor Mexicano, 109 Riverside in Lowell, is a restaurant operated by a staff that treats each other as family. Burgos-Olmos said that means singing together in the kitchen and other times arguing.
But the camaraderie allows customers to have an authentic experience with the food and each other. Burgos-Olmos described the fresh, homemade Mexican food as a “love language.”
“I cook with my heart,” the restaurant owner said. “I like to make everything super fresh and have everyone taste the food that I was taught.”
Burgos-Olmos grew up in a Puerto Rican household until her mother married a Mexican man, and “Mexican took over.”
