BEMIDJI — Michael Deer, a Laporte veteran, is calling all veterans to join him in donating to local food shelves before Veterans Day, Tuesday, Nov. 11. Deer plans to donate $100 and will then provide up to an additional $1,000 match of local veteran donations.
Deer's idea sprang due to the government shutdown that has halted Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program payments and placed increased demand upon local food banks and shelves. He hopes the motion will be beneficial in celebrating both Veterans Day and the Marine Corps. 250th birthday on Monday, Nov. 10.
He also hopes this will be one way to support a "bountiful Thanksgiving."
