A 17-year-old student was arrested after police say he brought a gun to Waterbury Career Academy.
Other students told police the teen might have a gun on Friday, Nov. 7. Officers said they learned some students had known about it the day before.
The school went into a shelter-in-place as officers moved in. Within minutes, police said the school resource officer and other officers found the student and detained him.
Police said the student had “a black handgun in his bookbag.” He was immediately arrested.
Superintendent Dr. Darren Schwartz said in a release that the school acted quickly once the report came in. “The school activated a shelter in place immediately after a student was found to be carrying a firearm, and the school resource officer responded and isolated the student in question,” he said.
The shelter order has been lifted.
Schwartz urged families to talk to their kids about safety. “We encourage you to continue discussing safety with your children and remind them to keep dangerous items off school grounds. Any student violating this policy will be subject to severe consequences,” he said.
Police are continuing to investigate.
