Monday, Nov. 10 will mark 50 years since the legendary SS Edmund Fitzgerald was lost in the stormy waves of Lake Superior.

All around the Great Lakes region, there will be memorial events to honor the lost crew. If you are planning to attend the public ceremony at Whitefish Point, there are some things to keep in mind before you arrive.

50th anniversary

The formal ceremonies mark 50 years since Nov. 10, 1975, when " The Fitz" sank in Lake Superior. All 29 onboard were lost.

The 729-foot-long ship was hauling a cargo of taconite pellets when it sank not far from Whitefish Point. It remains the largest ship to have sunk in the Great Lakes.
