George Morasch of the Calgary Highlanders told a rapt elementary school audience about his role in global conflict

George Morasch recalls being hunted by German U-boats on the way to war.

Elementary students at Rideau Park school had just viewed a brief documentary on the Second World War Battle of the Atlantic when the 102-year-old Calgary Highlander veteran brought that history to life for them.

Along with thousands of other Allied troops, he’d been squeezed onto the passenger liner RMS Queen Elizabeth to make the perilous voyage from North America to the U.K. in early 1943 in the buildup to D-Day the following year.

“It was a trip I will never forget,” said Morasch, clad in a blazer festooned with decorations and checkered Highlanders cap.
