ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) -The Salvation Army’s holiday fundraiser has started early this year.

Governor Mike Kehoe Friday rang the first bell to kick things off.

He said he applauds Missourians for helping their neighbors, but added he knows it is only a short-term fix.

“You’ve got great organizations and non-for-profits and food pantries all across the state that are prepared to help, so I know that Missourians are finding some solutions there, but the ultimate solution is to get the government back open,” Gov. Kehoe said.

The Salvation Army said more people are coming in for food than ever before, but they are also seeing more people volunteer to help.
