In its 39th day, the federal government shutdown has begun to impact airports as Newark and New York's other airports are seeing an increase in canceled flights.

The cancellations come as no surprise. U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said more cuts − potentially rising to 15% or even 20% of all scheduled flights − could be on the way if the record-breaking government shutdown continues.

Scores of cancellations spread across the country as airlines implemented Duffy's order to reduce traffic.

In Newark evidence of the shutdown's impact were coming apparent. FlightAware.com's Flight Tracker reported that at Newark Liberty roughly 51 flights in and out of the airport have been canceled in the past 24 hours.
