NEWARK - Gayle Chaneyfield Jenkins, a Central Ward City Council candidate whose campaign platform was built on challenging the Newark establishment, is still hanging in the race against Amina Bey, the candidate backed by Mayor Ras J. Baraka’s political machine, with only 87 votes separating the two.
The margin between Bey and Chaneyfield Jenkins has narrowed since Election Night, with Bey tallying 3,182 votes and Jenkins garnering 3,095, according to the unofficial results updated on the Essex County Clerk’s Office website on Thursday, Nov. 6.
All of Newark’s voting districts have reported early and same-day in-person voting, but all mail-in and provisional ballots are still being counted. Bey has captured 39.4% of the 8,080 votes cast so far, while Chaneyfield Jenkins has taken 38.3%.
