A promising rugby player who dreamt of turning professional may never play again after he was kicked in the face during a game. Nathan Wellings, 17, suffered a six-minute seizure after a brutal kick from rival player Antonio Embalo during a stoppage in play. ‌

The attack left Nathan with severe facial injuries and psychological trauma that effectively ended his rugby career. However, he has bounced back to forge a career as a firefighter and praised a police investigation after Embalo was handed a community sentence earlier this week. ‌

The violent incident took place in October 2021 while Nathan was playing for Bolton RUFC under-18s at home to Rochdale RUFC. Embalo, also 17 at the time, was later arrested and charged with section 18 grievous bodily harm ‌
