MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The federal government shutdown and SNAP benefit cuts have several organizations stepping up to help people in need - including a local sorority chapter.

On Saturday, members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated Beta Epsilon Omega Chapter collected non-perishable food items for the Mid-South Food Bank during their latest chapter meeting.

Several bins quickly filled up with canned goods and boxes of crackers and noodles and other food items. The Mid-South Food Bank says one dollar can provide four meals.

The sorority plans to deliver the items to the food bank next week.

WREG NewsChannel 3 is teaming up with Kroger to help our neighbors in need with a community food drive, also benefitting the Mid-South Food Bank. Click here for more information.
