Two Etowah County detention deputies accused of promoting prison contraband are behind bars Tuesday.

Tips about contraband in the Etowah County Detention Center led to an investigation and what the sheriff calls a "shakedown" inside.

Contraband was found, and evidence pointed to the involvement of the detention deputies.

After an internal investigation, Robert Phillips of Gadsden was arrested. Phillips admitted to bringing contraband into the jail in exchange for cash, according to the sheriff.

Another deputy, Maya Dudley of Gadsden, was also arrested and charged with promoting prison contraband and drug trafficking.
