MADISONVILLE, Ky. (WFIE) - For over 7 months, Hopkins County has been without it’s animal shelter.

The Hopkins County Humane Society was forced to demolish their shelter after a tornado in the spring, followed by complications during a damage assessment.

This led to every animal control officer on staff being laid off, and animals in the shelter going to other counties.

Executive director Dustin Potenza says this is unlike anything he’s ever dealt with.

“We’ve dealt with disasters and responded to disasters and that was all fine because we had our home base to come back to,” Potenza stated. “Losing our homebase is a completely different experience, and it’s been an emotional rollercoaster.”
