A British woman, aged 85, has tragically lost her life in Portugal after a tornado struck a campsite and hotel near Albufeira during Storm Claudia. The woman, who has not yet been named, was staying at the HolaCamp site in the Algarve when the extreme weather event occurred. The tornado, described by authorities as an "extreme wind phenomenon," left 28 others injured, including nationals from Britain, Portugal, and Spain, with ages ranging from six to 86. Initially reported missing, the woman's body was later discovered in the debris. Witnesses recounted the chaos as holidaymakers sought shelter from the fierce winds that sent debris flying. A source from Portugal's weather agency indicated a "high probability" that the event was indeed a tornado, stating, "It was a phenomenon of strong winds, an extreme wind phenomenon, that affected two units, a campsite and a hotel unit." The Hotel Eden was also impacted, with 19 individuals injured, one of whom sustained serious injuries. At the campsite, two others were reported to be seriously hurt alongside the deceased woman. Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa expressed his condolences, stating he felt "solidarity with the family of the victim who died as a result of Storm Claudia’s passage this morning in Albufeira." Albufeira's mayor, Rui Cristina, visited the affected areas and described the scene as "truly devastating." He confirmed, "From the outset, I have been monitoring the situation caused by the windstorm that hit our municipality. There are reports of several injuries and one fatality, an 85-year-old British national. On behalf of myself and the municipality, I offer my deepest condolences to the family and friends." Authorities are currently mobilising municipal resources and civil protection agencies to assist victims and restore safety in the area as quickly as possible.
