Donald Trump has announced plans to sue the BBC for between $1 billion (£759.8 million) and $5 billion (£3.79 billion) following the corporation's apology regarding an edited version of his 2021 speech. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Friday, Trump stated, "We’ll sue them for anywhere between $1bn and $5bn, probably sometime next week." This announcement comes after the deadline set by Trump's legal team for the BBC to respond expired at 10pm on Friday. The legal team had previously threatened to pursue a $1 billion defamation claim unless the BBC issued a retraction and apology. The BBC acknowledged that the splicing of Trump's speech, which occurred during a Panorama segment, was an "error of judgment" but declined to offer any financial compensation. Samir Shah, the chair of the BBC, sent a personal letter to the White House to express regret over the editing. Earlier in the week, Trump accused the BBC of "defrauding the public" in an interview with Fox News, claiming the edit made it seem as though he was directly inciting violence against the US Capitol on 6 January 2021. In a subsequent interview with GB News, he expressed a sense of duty to pursue legal action against the broadcaster. He remarked, "I’m not looking to get into lawsuits, but I think I have an obligation to do it. This was so egregious. If you don’t do it, you don’t stop it from happening again with other people." A BBC spokesperson responded, stating, "While the BBC sincerely regrets the manner in which the video clip was edited, we strongly disagree there is a basis for a defamation claim." Trump further claimed to have experienced significant success in litigating against news organisations, asserting, "Because it’s fake news. But I’ve never had anything so fake as the BBC. I’ve been doing this for a long time, I’ve never seen anything like (the BBC edit). That’s the most egregious." This story is still developing as further details emerge.
