HMRC has given taxpayers a major 77-day warning as it urges them to "get started". The Labour Party government's tax arm says members of the public who file their tax returns through Self Assessment only have 77 days left to do it.

The deadline is 31 January next year, with the UK’s tax authority urging people to send off the return early. It says those who file early know how much tax is owed sooner, meaning they get more time to prepare to pay their bill by the deadline.

Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC’s chief customer officer, said: “Now is the time to get started. Completing your return now means you know how much tax you need to pay ahead of the deadline.
