BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - No UVM football highlights in sports today. The Catamounts took the field for the last time 51 years ago today.

Football is a staple of most college campuses, but on November 16, 1974, UVM played its final game.

Facing a major budgetary crisis, the university made cuts across the board. The football team was the highest profile casualty.

The program had struggled in recent years, but in that final season, the team celebrated a big upset, beating UMass, New England’s top ranked team.

At the end of the 1974 season, UVM dropped football due to poor performance on the field and in the bank.
