BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WBRC ) - All lanes of US-280 at Pump House Road have reopened after construction forced a closure over the weekend.
The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) closed the lanes Friday night at 11 p.m. to install three bridge girders .
ALDOT says the contractor had until 6 a.m. Monday, Nov.17 to complete the project but finished work on the bridge more than 12 hours in advance.
The girders were being put in by large cranes, ALDOT said.
“What happens is these girders are like 10 feet in depth, so it’s gonna take large cranes to pick those girders up,” said DeJarvis Leonard, region engineer for ALDOT East Central Region before construction began.
ALDOT says there will be additional weekend road closures in the future to complete the project.
