EAST AURORA, N.Y. — A new village law in East Aurora aims to improve safety by cracking down on underage e-bike use, according to Police Chief Patrick Welch.

“We want to keep people safe. We want to keep people from injury,” Welch said, explaining the purpose behind the law recently passed by the Village Board.

Parents could now pay the price if their child is caught riding an e-bike illegally.

The new regulation expands on existing New York state law, which already prohibits anyone under 16 from operating an e-bike. Under the local law, police will now be able to impound e-bikes from underage riders and charge parents a fee to retrieve them.
