Susan Osborn, 17 years old in the spring of 1964, had a date with Pete Bates to attend Champaign High Schoo's senior prom. She made a special dress for the occasion.

She was a cheerleader and he was a swimmer. They met while serving on the student council.

“I dated him sophomore year until I went off to college and we kind of went our separate ways,” she recalled this past week. “He became a psychologist and moved to Colorado. He died in a motorcycle crash, I think in the late 1970s. He wasn’t very old.”

The Bloomington woman, now 79, searched her high school scrapbooks for a photo of the two in their prom finery but couldn’t find one. “I know I have seen a picture but don’t know where it is.”
