HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Organizers of the Eddie Aikau Foundation announced on Thursday, the Opening Ceremony for The Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational will take place on Dec. 5th at Waimea Beach Park.
This will be the first year for the contest since the passing of Clyde Aikau in May.
The opening ceremony marks the start of a three-month waiting period as they wait for the right swell with consistent 40-foot wave faces. Because the right swell is rare, the contest has only been held 11 times in its 41-year history.
The ceremony is an annual gathering of past Eddie champions, current Invitees and Alternates, the Aikau family, Eddie Aikau Foundation Board of Directors, and volunteers, event officials, sponsors, and community members.
The Royal Order of Kamehameha I will be in attendan
