The National Tunnel along the Montour Trail in will be closed for repair work through at least the end of the year, the trail’s council announced Friday.

The Montour’s longest tunnel, spanning 623 feet in Cecil, Washington County, will be temporarily shuttered to address deterioration on its concrete ceiling, according to the Montour Trail Council, which owns and manages the trail.

“Rehabilitation of this landmark tunnel will take time and considerable fundraising,” the council’s president Julian Wolfe said in a statement. “We trust trail users will support our efforts.”

The Montour Trail is the country’s longest suburban rail-trail for recreational use, according to the trail’s website. A half-loop stretches from Coraopolis to Clairton, and a northwest branch connects it to Pittsburgh
