After Yuma experienced several treacherous storms in September and continues to see above-average rainfall this season, the Yuma Public Works Department provided an overview of its storm response efforts to City Council on Nov. 18.

During the process of becoming the seventh public works agency to achieve national accreditation through the American Public Works Association, Yuma’s department switched over to PowerDMS, a policy management software that allows for a more systematic approach to storm response.

According to Public Works Manager Jose Garcia, the operation is broken into three phases: pre-storm preparations, in-the-field storm response and post-storm cleanup.

“A lot goes on during a storm, but our work begins way before it starts raining,” Garcia said.
