COLUMBIA — The Central Missouri Humane Society is running a short-term foster program to support its shelter animals for Thanksgiving.

The goal of Barksgiving is to get every adoptable pet in a foster home for the holiday.

"On holidays, we always have a limited staff here that’s cleaning and taking care of the pets," Humane Society Associate Director Michelle Casey said.

Casey said this year's adoption promotion is taking place at a time when the facility is very low on space.

“We are down to, I think, just a couple open kennels in the shelter at this point,” she said Friday.

The shelter is looking for people to foster dogs after the Humane Society took in several from an animal control impoundment case last week.

Cats are available for foster as well.
