WASHTENAW COUNTY, MI — A social worker with experience leading educational and care programs geared toward older adults will take the helm of a new Washtenaw County department.

Shannon Effler has been selected from more than 70 job applicants to serve as the county’s first Director of Aging Services. Effler, who is expected to step into the role in January, will be at the helm of the county’s newly formed Office of Aging Services, and lead services funded by the Old Persons Millage.

The countywide property tax levy is estimated to generate more than $11 million a year to benefit people 60 or older. County voters approved the 8-year millage at the polls in November 2024.
