JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. —

Since 1968, John Martin and his Christmas trees have been a fixture of the holiday season in Southern Indiana.

“Fifty-seven years, meeting a lot of people, we’ve had a really great time,” Martin reminisced. “I’ve got some friends who work for me just at Christmastime to sell trees. It’s been a great run, and I’ve really enjoyed it.”

Over the course of time, Martin estimates he has sold close to 200,000 Fraser firs and white pines to folks from both sides of the river.

While he does not know if this season will be his last selling trees in the Meijer parking lot in Jeffersontown, he does know he feels strong, and having his lot open is part of the formula that keeps him going.

“I’m afraid if I sit down, I’ll die, so I don’t want to sit down,” Martin said.
