A group of student-athletes and a former coach who say they’re seeking better treatment for girl wrestlers have filed a lawsuit against Cleveland High School and Portland Public Schools.
Former wrestling coach Kiera Gabaldon and five minors jointly filed the federal discrimination case alleging that the school and district violated Title IX by not giving the Cleveland girls wrestling team equal opportunities as the boys.
According to the lawsuit, Gabaldon was removed as the Cleveland girls wrestling coach after voicing her concerns about the “disparate treatment and discriminatory treatment of the girls’ team” in April and May of 2024 to head coach Rustin Marchello.
The lawsuit seeks to have Marchello removed as wrestling coach and to have Gabaldon reinstated as girls wrestling coach. M
