LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Another Kentucky infant has died from whooping cough, bringing the total to three infant deaths from the disease in the past 12 months.
The Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services said the three babies were not vaccinated against whooping cough, also known as pertussis.
Doctors recommend infants receive the whooping cough vaccine at two months, four months, six months and one year old.
“Pertussis is a vaccine preventable disease. We have vaccines that work well to prevent pertussis,” said Dr. Kris Bryant, an infectious diseases doctor at Norton Children’s Hospital.
Bryant has treated many cases of pertussis in her 25 years as an infectious disease doctor. She said the disease can affect people of all ages but is most severe in young infants.
