LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - For a group of aspiring essential workers, getting through school may become more challenging, due to a proposal from the Department of Education.

Professionals say in Kentucky, nurses are more important than ever, especially in rural communities that have limited access to healthcare. If this proposal becomes reality, nurses say it could be detrimental.

The plan is part of the Trump administration’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act, and would essentially cut the amount of federal loans nursing students are eligible for in half.

Nurses say this will keep dozens who want to enter the field from doing so.

“Shock and disappointment, if anything. Definitely disappointment,” said Nicky Wright, an orthopedic program coordinator at Baptist Health.
