Millions of Americans who rely on food assistance are predicted to be removed from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) as states move to comply with tightened federal rules.

The Department of Agriculture (USDA) has directed state agencies to implement changes included in Republican-backed spending law passed earlier this year.

SNAP currently supports about 42 million low- and no-income people nationwide, offering monthly help with grocery purchases. The latest overhaul, part of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), tightens work requirements and narrows exemptions for certain adults.
