NEWARK - A federal judge has terminated a nearly 10-year monitoring of Newark’s police force after ruling that the department has effectively implemented constitutional policing requirements for stops, searches, arrests and use of force.

U.S. District Court Judge Madeline Cox Arleo lifted the 2016 consent decree, which required the city and the Newark Police Department to improve the quality of policing through various forms of training and reforms, on Thursday, Nov. 20.

Arleo found that “Newark has committed the time, effort and resources needed to implement systemic changes,” and that the “Newark Police Department is vastly improved and has the infrastructure in place to continue to improve in the future.
