BRUNSWICK, Ohio – Advocates for building a new Interstate 71 interchange in Brunswick might be facing an uphill battle.

Early returns from a long-term study of the I-71 corridor through Brunswick, Strongsville and North Royalton say traffic is not nearly as bad as feared. But that’s not to say there aren’t some problem spots at times, especially near SouthPark Mall in Strongsville.

“To our surprise, it’s not as bad as you would expect,” said Dave Becker from HDR Engineering Inc., a consultant hired by the Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency to help study traffic in a 27-square mile area from Pearl Road (U.S. 42) in Middleburg Heights to Center Road (Ohio 303) in Brunswick.
