President Donald Trump says he has directed his special envoy Steve Witkoff to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow as momentum builds toward hammering out a deal to end Russia’s war in Ukraine. At the same time, Trump said, Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll will meet with the Ukrainians, after which the US president hopes to meet with Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky – but not until a deal is more finalized. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov indicated earlier that Moscow could reject an amended US peace plan if its terms are “fundamentally different” to the understanding reached during the Trump-Putin summit in Alaska a few months ago.
