A 71-year-old man was killed in a chain-reaction crash on I-87 in Saratoga County, and State Police are searching for the tractor-trailer that struck him and left the scene.

The wreck happened around 8:10 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 23, in the southbound lanes of I-87 in Clifton Park, just south of Exit 11, according to New York State Police.

Two vehicles were traveling south when one rear-ended the other, sending the struck car off the left shoulder and into a guardrail. That vehicle, driven by William Reichman, came to rest against the guardrail facing north after it was hit a second time by another southbound car.

Reichman exited his vehicle and was standing in the left lane when a southbound tractor-trailer struck him, police said. He fell onto the roadway and was hit by two more vehicles that were unable to avoid him. Those drivers stopped immediately and cooperated with investigators.

State Police said the tractor-trailer involved in the initial pedestrian strike continued south without stopping. The trailer was described as white, and the tractor is believed to have significant front-end damage.

Reichman was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. His identity was released Tuesday, Nov. 25, following family notification.

Troopers are urging anyone who witnessed the crash or who has dashcam footage of the incident or the tractor-trailer to contact investigators at 518-457-6811 or email Crimetip@troopers.ny.gov.

Additional details about Reichman’s life were not immediately available. Loved ones are invited to share a statement, funeral details, and/or photos by emailing mmashburn@dailyvoice.com.
