The province is aiming to meet the energy-intensive needs for AI technologies through changes to Bill 8, the Utilities Statutes Amendment Act.

The proposal would allow data centres in the province to bring their own power generation, while modernizing Alberta’s electricity market to keep the power grid reliable and affordable.

If the proposed amendment passes, it would prioritize and accelerate the approval process for data centres to set up in the province, while supporting their connection to Alberta’s power grid.

It would also ensure that data centre projects — and not Alberta taxpayers — would foot the bill for necessary transmission upgrades for data centre grid connections.
