BOISE, Idaho — At least 20 people in Idaho have reported drinking raw milk before becoming sick with Campylobacter bacteria since the beginning of August 2025, health officials announced Tuesday. Six of those cases were from children under the age of twelve.
Campylobacter bacteria is linked to the consumption of raw and undercooked poultry, meat, seafood and other produce, according to the Center for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC). Drinking untreated water can also cause illness, which is known as campylobacteriosis. This can cause symptoms like diarrhea.
Three cases of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) infections have also been reported in connection to raw milk consumption, the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare announced. STEC can cause “very serious infections."
