HERNDON, Va. — A 23-year-old Nokesville man is facing charges after police say he was drunk behind the wheel when he crashed into an ambulance that had its emergency lights on. A passenger riding in his car was killed in the crash .
According to the Fairfax County Police Department, the deadly crash happened on Tuesday near Worldgate Drive and Alton Square in Herndon. First responders were called to the intersection shortly after 4 p.m.
Detectives with the Crash Reconstruction Unit (CRU) determined the ambulance was on its way to a medical emergency with equipment activated when the ambulance driver tried to turn onto Alton Square. That's when police say 23-year-old Jose Lopez Martinez failed to yield and hit the ambulance with his 2007 Hyundai.
