A retired professor from Edinburgh has opened up after falling victim to an AI romance scam. Nikki McLeod, 77, admits she was 'lonely' after the end of a 25-year relationship.

She began talking to people over Facebook feeling 'desperate to connect'. Before long, she began talking to who she believed was Alla Morgan - 'an off-shore oil rig worker in her mid-30s'.

Nikki felt it was too good to be true, but then 'Alla' sent her a video which convinced her. In August 2024, Alla started asking for cash - saying she needed funds to visit Nikki, reports The Mirror .

Nikki was 'bewitched', so sent the money. The requests for money kept coming, and reached £20,000.
