ROCKPORT, Maine — Like many communities across Maine, Rockport is facing a shortage of affordable housing. But a new project on a former dairy farm is offering a creative solution—one that combines new homes with land preservation.
Through a subsidiary company, Maine Coast Heritage Trust (MCHT) recently gifted a six-acre property in Rockport to the Midcoast Regional Housing Trust . The site expands on the MCHT's current Erickson Field Preserve and includes a historic farmhouse and open farmland, once part of a working dairy operation.
Now, the land is being transformed.
"One of the needs we hear about all the time is housing for our communities," said Erin Espinosa with Maine Coast Heritage Trust. "So this felt like a natural partnership."
The plan is to create a homestead of work
