Winnipeg firefighters dealt with a series of emergencies from Wednesday morning into early Thursday, responding to four structure fires across the city and pulling a person from the Red River in critical condition.

The first call came at 10:43 a.m. Wednesday, when crews were sent to a two-and-a-half-storey home in the 300 block of Flora Avenue. People were reported trapped on an upper floor, and 911 callers said they were trying to get out through windows. Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke and flames. A neighbour set up a ladder and helped everyone down before crews went inside. Paramedics checked the occupants, and no one needed to go to hospital. The fire was under control by 11:15 a.m. The cause remains under investigation.
