CLEVELAND, Ohio — Deaths from lung cancer in Cuyahoga County are slowly dropping, but it remains the deadliest form of the disease in the region.

It accounted for 23% of all cancer deaths in Cuyahoga County from 2018 to 2022, making it the leading cause of cancer mortality, despite significant advances in detection and treatment.

The county reported an annual average of 1,095 cases and 659 deaths from 2018 to 2022, according to data from the county and the Ohio Department of Health.

Though deaths are gradually decreasing, the disease ranked as the third most common cancer diagnosis in Cuyahoga County, following prostate and female breast cancer.
