A thief who kicked and stamped a pensioner to death before stealing his box of cornflakes and cottage pie has been found guilty of his murder and sentenced to 23 years in prison.
John Mackey, 87, visited a north London Co-op store in Manor House, north London, where he bought food and a newspaper. He was followed in the street and set upon by Peter Augustine on May 6. Passers-by saw Augustine attack tragic Mr Mackey, before searching his jacket as he lay on the ground.
The robber made off with the victim’s black duffel bag containing his purchases. The victim was taken to hospital where he regained consciousness after being treated for bleeding on the brain and broken ribs, but died two days later.
