Letter writer Andrew Kelly thinks the solution to school start times is to make children go to bed earlier ( “Parents should be responsible for students’ sleep,” Nov. 25).

I invite the Baltimore County resident to check out the studies by the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Psychological Association and the National Institutes of Health, all of which indicate that as children grow, their circadian rhythms shift forward by an hour or more, delaying the release of melatonin.

In other words, parents who force their kids to stare at the ceiling for a few hours will not get them to go to sleep earlier.

Meanwhile, I sincerely hope all those incorrigibly unruly children described in Kelly’s letter are staying off his lawn.
