The Waterloo Region District School Board is facing a legal challenge over its mandatory land acknowledgements.

The review was launched on behalf of Geoffrey Horsman, who is a biochemistry professor and member of the Kitchener Waterloo Collegiate and Vocational School Council (Council), and the father of three children attending district schools.

In its application on behalf of Horsman, lawyers for the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms (JCCF) argue by the reading of land acknowledgements at school council meetings it’s violated Charter freedoms by forcing ideological statements and banning debate.
