Waterloo Region got its first dose of winter and with it came massive delays on local roads and highways.

Over the past 24 hours, more than 30 centimetres of snow has fallen in the region, with more still expected over the weekend.

Around noon on Friday, OPP said all westbound lanes were closed on Highway 401 between Cedar Creek and Drumbo roads in Blandford-Blenheim, west of Cambridge.

In a video posted to social media, OPP officer Ed Sanchuk said 40,000 litres of liquid asphalt a commercial truck was carrying were spilling onto the highway and a significant cleanup is underway.

Multiple collisions were reported on this stretch of road, but no injuries were reported.

In a later update, OPP said the road will likely reopen around 6 p.m.
