The University of Waterloo has eliminated 165 staff positions and 49 faculty positions since the start of 2025 as it embarks on a three-year strategy to return to a balanced budget.
Most of the reductions were achieved through voluntary programs, attrition and the current hiring freeze, said school vice-presidents Thomas Duever and Jacinda Reitsma in a budget update this week, adding that “fewer than 50 people have lost their positions as a result of budget reductions.”
Including 2024, more than 122 employees have accepted voluntary inventive retirement packages, including 75 faculty members, 29 staff and 18 union staff.
“As we enter the second year of our three-year plan, our focus remains on achieving long-term balance while preserving the university’s academic and research excellence
